Mary Ann Simmonds was the daughter of William Simmonds, she was born in Nagpore, India in 1827. Mary Ann's father was a serjeant in the Madras European regiment, he died in 1835 when Mary Ann was just 8 years old. Mary Ann married Job Hargraves, a private in the 1st Madras Fusiliers, at the age of 17 in 1844. mary Ann's father and husband were both from England but because her mother was Indian or Anglo Indian, Mary Ann was also Anglo Indian or Indo Briton.
