The roots of the present day McSkimming family were found in Galloway in south west Scotland from around the mid 1700's. Today, this area is known as Dumfries and Galloway.

In the late 18th century the family surname was Skimine and then at the start of the 19th century, it became Skimming. Towards the end of the 19th century, the family started to use the prefix Mc or Mac.

By 1820 the family moved across Wigtown Bay from the county of Wigtownshire to the Stewardry of Kirckudbright.

Up until the introduction of railways, The family were mainly agricultural workers but afterwards, several were employed on the railways.
